An SEO Glossary of common terms, acronyms and related web terminology.

We have provided this glossary of search engine optimisation terms to help both, newcomers, and the more experienced SEO'rs out there. It is by no means complete though we have tried to include as much as we can.

Homepage

The main page of a website usually called index.html, php, asp etc. This page is the hub of the site and is commonly the first page people visit.

H1 Tag

H1 tag stands for heading and is HTML code and can be used to break up your webpage content into sections and gives more importance to a specific piece of text.

HTML

HTML stands for hypertext mark-up language. Html is code predominantly used for webpage's. A web browser interprets the HTML code and displays it as a webpage to the end user.HTML is not the only language used on the internet some others are php and asp.

Hidden Text

Hidden text is used to show different text to a search engine than what the website visitor sees. This is considered as a black hat technique and could lead the website being banned from a search engines. 

HTTP

HTTP or hyper text transfer protocol is the protocol used to send information across the internet. The purpose of this protocol originally was a way to publish and transfer hyper text pages.

HTTPS

Hyper text transfer protocol secure is very similar to HTTP but with a secure connection. This protocol is often used for e-commerce websites to deal with payments.
