SEO Glossary F

Flash

Software developed by Macromedia who was bought by Adobe in 2007. Flash can be used for animation, even whole websites can be created with Flash. Flash isn't a good option for designing a website from a SEO standpoint as Search engines can't read text displayed in Flash and so has difficulty in indexing Flash website. Flash can be used in websites but should be used sparingly.

Forum

A Forum is a discussion boards used to build communities. People can come together with common interests and share their knowledge on a particular subject.

Favicon

A small icon that appears in the address bar of a web browser.  Usually the websites company logo.

Firefox

A popular open source web browser. Firefox which is designed by Mozilla is a free alternative to Internet Explorer by Microsoft.

FTP

Stands for file transfer protocol. FTP is a protocol for sending information between computers also used to upload a website to the server.

FTP Program

A cheap sometimes free program used to transfer files between computers some good free examples are Filezilla and Cute FTP.

Frames

A technology used to display multiply webpage's in one window. Frames used to be popular a few years ago but aren't used that much these days as search engines has trouble indexing frames. Not a good option for SEO.

FAQ's

Frequently ask questions are displayed on a websites to help answer some of the most common questions a website visitor may have concerning a product or service.

Fresh Content

Keeping your site fresh by constantly adding new content to your website. Search engines like it when you add more pages and content to your website. It helps to retain your website visitors as the site always has new information for the visitor to see.

Favourites

A term used to describe bookmarked websites in Internet Explorer. The bookmarked websites are stored in a folder for quick reference.
